What Problems Can Sports Medicine Treat
Arthroscopic Surgery
Arthroscopic Surgery is a surgical procedure for diagnosing joint problems and treating them. It’s a minor surgery which means you can go home after the procedure. Dr. Ragsdell specializes in arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder.
During the procedure, the doctor administers anesthesia and makes a small incision. The doctor then inserts a small arthroscope tool with a camera and light to find the problem in your joint. The surgeon then uses miniature surgical instruments to correct the issue.
Rotator Cuff Repair
The rotator cuff includes muscles and tendons that hold and power your shoulder. Rotator cuff injuries may occur if you strain your shoulder during sports or if you fall on your shoulder. If a rotator cuff injury does not respond to other treatments, an orthopedic surgeon may recommend rotator cuff repair surgery to restore the strength and range of motion of your shoulder. In general, the tendon takes approximately six weeks to heal with pain management and rehabilitation from the Regenesis Orthopedics team.
Meniscus Tears
A torn meniscus in the knee is one of the most common sports injuries. The injury occurs when a person forcefully rotates their knee, common during sports activities. When you have a meniscus tear, you may experience pain and catching when you move your knee.
This is because the cartilage between the major bones at the knee, the femur and the tibia, grind against each other. The meniscus cartilage absorbs shock between the bones and transmits weight. Any injury disrupts weight distribution and friction management, making it impossible to play sports.
Ice, compression, and rest can help with symptoms. However, if these treatment options don’t work, your orthopedic surgeon may perform knee arthroscopy and remove or repair the torn cartilage.
ACL Reconstruction
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a stability ligament in the knee. It connects your thighbone and shin bone, and supports the knee joint. ACL injuries are common during sports activities. You may experience ACL injuries if you:
- Slow down suddenly and switch directions
- Pivot on the knees with the feet planted to the ground
- Receive high-impact blows to the knee
ACL reconstruction is an outpatient surgical procedure where Dr. Ragsdell and his team repair or replace the torn ligament with a tendon graft.
Cartilage Damage
Cartilage injuries occur when an athlete suddenly twists their leg at their knee, causing damage to the articular cartilage or the meniscus. Damage may also occur due to high impact blows to the knee, common in sports or other trauma.
If you have cartilage damage, your orthopedic surgeon may recommend arthroscopy and surgery to repair the damaged cartilage. Consult Regenesis orthopedics for a consultation on cutting edge cartilage repair techniques.
